Cutting the Cable Cord Part 3

on in Technology
  • Print

Over the past couple of months we have talked about Cutting the Cable Cord. We have discussed streaming apps from your smart TV or your computer. We have discussed Over-The-Air broadcasting and antennas. Did I miss anything?  YES!  With most cable packages you can get a DVR, what do you do now? There are DVR’s without cable options.

We are going to present several options in no particular order. You can determine which is the best DVR for your use.

Option One: Tablo2 Tuner, which is a two tuner that lets you record two shows at once and recorded programs can be viewed on up to six (6) devices at once. The cost point for the Tablo 2 is $220.00. There is also a larger four tuner version, that allows you to record four programs at once at a cost point of $300.00. The units come with two USB ports and antenna input on the back. Must haves with this device are a WiFi connection, an antenna connection, a 1TB external hard drive and paying for the one-time lifetime subscription which makes programming and recordings a breeze.

Option Two: ChannelMaster DVR+ is a subscription free program. The cost is in the base unit. There are a couple of built-in storage versions 16GB of storage at a cost point of $249 and 1TB for $399.00. This unit also has two USB ports,  an antenna input, an Ethernet jack, HDMI, a remote, and mini digital optical audio output. The unit does not have WIFI, but you can use one of the USB ports to connect a WiFi dongle.

Option Three: TiVo Roamio OTA can record up to four programs at a time, has a built in WiFi, 500 GB hard drive and a remote control. The cost point for this unit is $50.00. It does not work with FiOS pay-TV services. The TiVo Roamio OTA requires a $15.00 per month subscription fee and you can only use it on one TV. If you need a second unit, you have to purchase the Tivo Mini at the cost of $150.00. There is no extra subscription fee.

Option Four: The TiVo Roamio, about $170 at Amazon, also has Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime built in (you still have to pay their subscription fees) and has a 1TB hard drive. TiVo Roamio also has a monthly subscription of $14.99 a month.

So let’s review the requirements for these DVR units:

  1. An HDTV antenna
  2. An internet connection (wired or WiFi)
  3. A USB hard drive storage space for recording your favorite programs

The simple truth is that all of these DVR models are perfect for cutting the cable cord without dragging that old VHS recorder to record your favorite programs. The more features the more the price goes up. Basically cutting the cable cord is a simple and easy process.

So are you ready to cut the cord?  We are here to help you save your money and break free from the chains from cable.
